Smoothelin

First identified by monoclonals made against gizzard (van der Loop et al, 1996).  Smoothelin is a minor component of smooth muscle (Wehrens et al, 1997). Two forms of smoothelin exist, smoothelin-A and smoothelin-B expressed in smooth muscle. The smoothelin gene (Smtn) in mice is on chromosome 11 band A2-A3 by fluorescence in situ hybridization (Rensen et al, 2000).  The actin binding region of the smoothelins are of the CH type found in spectrin a-actinins and dystrophins.
